5 Ways to Stop Laziness In Its Tracks

5 Ways to Stop Laziness In Its Tracks

Is procrastination eating into your valuable study time? Does it stop you from making the change to a healthier lifestyle or affecting your performance at work?
We all have our lazy, unproductive moments, when we really don’t feel like doing anything. The problem is, when these lazy moments become too frequent and actually stop us from moving our life forward.

Here are 5 powerful, butt-kicking ways to stop laziness, beat procrastination and get more done.

Uncover the true reason behind your laziness
The answer to ‘How to stop laziness’, starts with the underlying factors behind it. Laziness just like procrastination can be caused by deep psychological emotions such as feeling overwhelmed, stuck, afraid of failure or simply uninspired. Not every task or activity is exciting and fun to do.
Frequently, we may find ourselves stuck with tasks that seem complex, time-consuming and boring. It’s absolutely normal to resist doing them, but it helps to know what causes this resistance, so that you can figure out the best way to deal with it.

Find your ‘hot buttons
Discover what really motivates you. Not in a ‘blah-blah find your passion’ way, but here and now.
What usually helps you to spring into action? Is it an approaching deadline? The sense of responsibility? Tony Robins’s inspirational video on YouTube? The thought of an upcoming vacation? A little reward that you promised yourself? Or the fear of looking like an underachiever in the eyes of your colleagues and your friends?
We all have these ‘hot buttons’, based on either moving towards something pleasant or avoiding something highly unpleasant (like a stern look from  the boss or a parking ticket).
When you find what motivates you, it will be much easier to use this knowledge to your advantage and stop laziness.

List 3 things you want to accomplish before you go to bed
It’s that easy. You don’t need to write a laundry list of things that you want to get done. You just have to pick 3 tasks and write them down. Putting something in writing is a sign of commitment. It’s like a contract that you sign with yourself, promising that you will finish these tasks before you go to bed (even if it means staying up an extra hour).
When you get in a habit of listing 3 things and getting them done, you will no longer have to worry about laziness or procrastination.  Just three small, but consistently met tasks a day can add up to some jaw-dropping positive life changes by the end of the year!

Work in blocks of time and take breaks
We often procrastinate, because we are physically and mentally tired, not because we don’t want to try harder. Seemingly unrelated things such as lack of sleep, a heavy meal at lunch, or too many hours spent sitting in front of the computer, have a huge impact on our productivity, concentration and performance.
You may push and you may pull, trying to keep up with your expectations and the expectations of other, but eventually you will wear yourself out. So don’t push yourself to the point where your body and mind are crying out for a break. Schedule your procrastination by allowing yourself to take 10-15 minute breaks after every 40 minutes of work. Get up, move around, breathe some fresh air, change your surroundings and you’ll notice that it is much easier to create momentum when you get back to work.

Allow yourself One Lazy day
If you force your body on a strict diet, it will go into starvation mode. Which means that every time you eat something caloric, your body stores these calories as fat, trying to protect itself from starving again in the future. The same mechanism may be triggered by pushing your mind and body to work harder, instead of letting yourself relax, rest and recharge. They will take their down time whenever they can (even if it means procrastinating at work).
Don’t force yourself into ‘down time starvation mode’. Slow down. Let yourself enjoy one lazy day and just do nothing, without feeling guilty or stressed out about it. It may go a long way towards stay productive throughout the rest of the week.

MANAGING MONEY!

MANAGING MONEY!

Every single rupee counts, especially during downturn; adopting a method to your purchasing and spending pattern could indeed help you manage your household better.
Every household is in India is feeling the pulse of the changing economic dynamics. While investing carefully during these testing times is one aspect that every woman of a house pays utmost attention to, listing things that will make life simpler is another aspect that would ease the tension off on how money flows out of your bank account.

Here's how to avoid spending more money?
  • Buy things that you would need the most and most important, buy things that you are going to use the most.
  • Cut down on your lifestyle needs which do not come under bare necessities.
  • Plan your weekly budget instead of a monthly one. This would give somewhat clear picture of what exactly you are thinking of spending on.
  • Don't buy toiletries and groceries in bulk as you used to do. Calculate how much of each stuff you are going to need and then make purchases accordingly.
  • Similarly, avoid stocking frozen food stuff in large quantities. Ditto for vegetable shopping. Planning vegetable purchases and frozen food purchases according to one's needs on a weekly or a daily basis would not lead to wastage, especially of vegetables.
  • Think economy and don't look for exotic vegetables which cost a bomb.
  • Reduce your spending on cosmetics that you can do away with till good time arrives.
  • Pay a careful watch on electricity consumption. Use the minimum of your microwave oven, electric rice cooker and also geyser. Refrigerator is a basic necessity, so you can't avoid that. However, you can save some units by lowering the coolness level according to the season. If the weather is pleasant and the atmosphere is cool enough, you can also do without the AC.
  • Cut short of your movie going and dining out spree. Arrange for a gourmet dinner and experience the fun of watching a movie at home with a homemade popcorn - unlimited fun and good sleep, good food and good life - that should be the priority in life, albeit with a well drafted list of dos and donts.

Winning vs. Winners: THREE INSPIRATIONAL WINNERS

Winning vs. Winners: THREE INSPIRATIONAL WINNERS

What is the difference between winning and being a winner? You all would be thinking that why I am making a similar post like the last time. Don't worry in this post I will be telling about some inspirational persons who did not won the race but they were winners. Being a winner is a spirit but winning is an event. Winners have kept winning in perspective based on their value system.

THREE INSPIRATIONAL WINNERS

Lawrence Lemieux

The Olympics is a lifetime event. Lawrence Lemieux stopped racing in an Olympic Yacht Race to help a fellow competitor who was in trouble. The whole world was watching. His priority of safety and concern for other people's lives was greater than his desire to win. Even though he had not win the race, he was a winner. He was honored by kings and queens all over the world because he kept the spirit of the Olympic alive.

Reuben Gonzalez

Reuben Gonzales was in the final match of a racquetball tournament playing for the world title. In the final game, at match point, Gonzalez played a super shot. The referee and the linesman both confirmed that the shot was good and he was good as he was declared the winner. But Gonzalez, after a little pause and hesitation, turned back to shake his opponent's hand and said, "The shot was faulty." He lost the serve and eventually the match. Everyone was stunned. Who could imagine that a player with everything official in his favor, with winning in his pocket, would disqualify himself and lose. When asked whu he did it, Gonzalez replied, "It is the only thing to do in order to maintain my integrity." He lost the match, yet he was a winner.

Unknown

A group of salespeople left town for a meeting and told their families they would be back home Friday evening for supper. But with meetings the way they are, one thing led to another and the meeting didn't end on time. They had to catch their flight back home, but arrived at the airport with oly a few minutes to spare. They ran, with tickets in hand, hoping to be able to board the plane. While running, one of them hit a table knocking over a fruit basket. The fruit scattered and lay bruised all over the floor but they didn't have time to stop. They made it to the plane just in time to board. All of them breathed a sigh of relief that they had made it, expect for one. He got up, said good-bye to his friends, and returned to the table with the fruits. What he saw made him glad that he had come bavk. Behind the table was a ten-year-old blind girl who was selling the fruits to make a living. He said, "I hope we haven't ruined your day." He pulled out ten dollars from his wallet, handed to her and said, "This will take care of the fruits" and left. The girl couldn't see what was going on; but as the footsteps faded away, she shouted from behind, "Are you God?" The salesman missed his fight but was he a winner? You bet.

One could be a winner without a winner and one can be a loser with a medal if winning is not kept in perspective.

Never Give Up!! - Reasons, Inspiration and Strategies

Never Give Up!! - Reasons, Inspiration and Strategies

At some point in the various journeys we embark on in our lives, we get to a part where we feel like giving up. Sometimes we give up before we even start and other times we give up just before we are about to make that huge break-through that we have been putting so much effort in to achieve.
I am a school student. I had my exams going on last week. And you know my first exam was of Mathematics (my enemy, because I hate Maths very much, really very much) I gave my best, but when I stood up to get results I was really disappointed. I thought of giving up Maths, but I got some inspiration from my friends, family and teachers (which I am going to share now.) I decided to work more harder on Maths because I get good results in all other subjects (or you can say excellent results.)
The number one reason people don’t get what they want is because they give up too soon. That’s a true stat that I just made up, but I would venture to guess it’s not far off. You’ve probably given up on a lot of things before.
  • You did your best in your exam, but not got the results - so you gave up.(my reason)
  • You didn’t get the first job you wanted – so you gave up.
  • The first business you started working on failed – so you gave up.
  • The first time you went out for a run, you puked – so you gave up.
  • The first time you sent in a writing piece, you got turned down – so you gave up.
It could be anything, but chances are whatever it is, it boiled down to this: you didn’t get what you wanted right away so you gave up.

STOP GIVING UP.
Perseverance, next to adaptability is the most important skill you can have.  And it’s just that, a skill. Like any other skill in the world, you might be born with a more natural ability to persevere than others, but you can learn to stick with things and persevere if you want to. In fact, the one thing that sets people I know who succeed in the long run over the people who don’t is the ability to persevere, keep going and never give up.

The goal of this article is to get you to stop giving up!

I have created this list of 12 reasons why you should never give up and I hope that you will find it before you give up, so that I can inspire you to keep going and some killer strategies for never giving up!

1- As Long As You Are Alive Anything Is Possible
The only valid excuse you have to give up is if you are dead. As long as you are alive (and healthy and free) you have the choice to keep trying until you finally succeed.

2- Be Realistic
The chance of mastering something the first time you do it is almost non-existent. Everything takes time to learn and you will make mistakes. Learn from them.

3- You Are Strong
You are stronger than you think. One little setback is not enough to stop you from achieving your goals. Neither are 10 or 100 or 1000 setbacks.

4- Prove Yourself
You don’t want to be known as someone that is weak and gives up. Go out there and prove yourself to the world and to yourself. You CAN and WILL achieve what you set out to do. The only time you fail is when you give up.

5- Has It Been Done Before?
If someone else can do it then so can you. Even if it is only one other person in the world that has achieved what you have set out to achieve, that should be reason enough for you to never give up.

6- Believe In Your Dreams
Don’t sell yourself short. In life there are going to be many people who will try to bring you down and tell you what you want to achieve is not possible. Don’t let anyone destroy your dreams.

7- Your Family and Friends.
Let the people you love and who mean the world to you be your inspiration to persist and persevere. Maybe you need to try a different angle, study more or practice more but don’t give up!

8- Because I Tell You To.
Not that I am any sort of guru or Godly figure, but if you want to give up then don’t. Just because I’m telling you not to.

9- There Are People Worse-Off
Right now there are many people who are in a worse situation and environment than you are right now. Are you thinking about giving up running 5 miles a week? Think about the people who are unable to even walk and how much they would give to be able to run 5 miles every day.

10- Improve Our World
When you achieve whatever you set out to achieve you can use your success to make a difference to the world or other peoples lives.

11- Let The Haters Hate
There will always be haters. There will always be plenty of naysayers  and people who try to tear you down. Don’t pay attention to them and don’t take what they say to heart. Let the haters hate and you keep believing in yourself.

12- You Deserve To Be Happy
Don’t ever let anybody tell you otherwise. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to have success. Keep that mindset and never give up until you reach your destination!

Want ME to give you some inspiration?

1- Michael Jordan
Arguably the best basketball player of all time. He attributes his success to all his failures. He just never gave up even when he knew he had missed over 300 shots and had missed the  winning shot of the game many times. Every time he got knocked down he got back up again.

2- Lance Armstrong
Lance was diagnosed with serious cancer that had spread throughout his entire body. He had cancer cells the size of golf balls in his lungs. Despite all odds he overcame the cancer and set out to win the Tour de France 6 Consecutive years in a row.

3- Muhammad Ali
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. Muhammad Ali is one of the best boxers the world has ever known. He suffered only 5 losses while having 56 wins and was the first boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship three times. This is a guy who literally knows how to get knocked down and get back up.

4- The Man Who Created The Marathon
Very long ago an Athenian herald was sent to Sparta to get help when the Persians landed in Greece. It was said that he ran 240km in 2 days and after that he ran 40km to announce the victory of the Greeks only to collapse and die on the spot from exhaustion. If you ever feel like things are difficult, imagine what it would be like to run 240km in 2 days. (Don’t try that because you might die from it, but use it as an inspiration).

5- Chris Gardner – The Pursuit of Happiness
Have you seen the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness”? It is based on the life story of Chris Gardener, a man who went for the lowest of the lows in an environment where most people would give up (no money, no job) to the highest of the highs (A millionaire with his own investment firm). If you ever think about giving up, watch this movie!

6- Kanye West
I’m pretty sure you have heard of the rapper Kanye West. Read his story. He is a big inspiration for me and proves that you can go from having very little to being among the most famous and respected people in the world.

7- Nelson Mandela
Campaigned for justice and freedom in his South Africa. Spent 20 years in jail for his opposition to apartheid. On release he healed the wounds of apartheid by his magnanimous attitude toward his former political enemies.

6 Killer Strategies for Never Giving Up!!

Luckily, like everything, not giving up is a skill you can learn. Here are some strategies for never giving up to help you the next time you want to quit.

1. Go Workout

A long run can clear your mind in ways that few other things can. Same with a solid session of throwing around a lot of heavy weight. Get moving. Go do something different. Push yourself physically. The best way to get past imaginary limits is to make them as physical as possible and then physically smash them into pieces. When you do that it reminds you that the limits that seem so real in your mind, aren’t real at all. When you’re in the weight room, the iron never lies. It shows you exactly who you are and that with solid hard work you can overcome something you used to think was impossible to do.

2. Forget About It

You got rejected, turned down or met some other minor setback? Forget about it. Literally just forget about it. Move on to something else instead and put that out of your mind.
In my mind sometimes, I think things were really, really easy, because looking back on things I tend to forget all the hard parts. I look at whatever I did and think “well that wasn’t so hard.”
Of course it’s wasn’t now that you’re done with it!
But there were a ton of times along the way that things were difficult, but I just put them out of my head. It turns out, I have a very short term memory of all the times I’ve screwed up, failed, and been rejected. It’s not that they didn’t happen – it’s just that I didn’t let them stop me. I put them out of  my mind and kept going, with whatever added wisdom I picked up from that experience.
For example: When I first started writing online, I sent a bunch of samples to a few blogs that I thought were great, only to get rejected time after time after time. I’d spend a week on an article only to get a “no thanks” back from a blog I thought was amazing. So I quit, packed up my laptop ran to my room, cried for a few months and never wrote another thing again, right?
Well, actually I just made my own site and started writing. And I still wasn’t any good. I was bad when I started (really bad), but I’ve gotten less and less bad as time goes on. As I’ve improved I realize those sites that I thought were amazing, weren’t that amazing after all. They were good, and they were right (the pieces I sent them weren’t great) but they weren’t blogging Gods and their judgment of wherever I was at the time, didn’t mean I couldn’t improve and get better. I still get rejected all the time, but I just keep going.
If you’re facing a setback, rejection, or failure, sometimes it’s easy to turn on your short term memory and continue anyways.

3. Reframe Your Story

Reframing your story is one of the most powerful things you can do.
Rethink the lens you’re looking at your life through. Instead of worrying about the struggle you’re in the midst of, remind yourself you’re a character in a story. Characters experience conflict and the conflict you’re going through is part of what’s going to make your story so great in the end.
Your current circumstances are not final outcomes.
Your circumstances define the conflict, but not the final result. The harder the struggle, the greater the story. The more triumphant it is in the end when you overcome the conflict you find yourself immersed in.
When other people give up, you keep going and remember that there’s more to the story than what you’re experiencing right now.

4. Keep Your Head Up.

The crap you’re going to seems so immense because you’re focused directly on it – looking directly into and analyzing every piece of crap that flies your way. When you raise your head up, you look beyond the mess you’re stuck in right now and see the bigger picture and sometimes that’s all you need. Keeping your head up allows you to see the simple solution to the problem that you used to think was ridiculously complex.

5. Make Quitting Not An Option

Just decide that you’re not going to quit. This is so effective, and so simple, but hardly anyone does it. Just decide you’re not going to quit.
No matter what. Period. End of Story.
If you get punched in the face. Keep going. If you go bankrupt. Suck it back up and keep going. If you get laughed at, mocked or pushed down. Just get back up. Get back at it and keep going. Be relentless.
Decide that quitting is not an option and, no matter how many times you fail, it won’t be an option.

6. Watch Someone Do Something Impossible

What can you do? You’re just a little tiny person on earth. Good thing people are capable of doing incredible things.
When it feels like you can’t do anything, it can be helpful to be reminded by others who have done amazing things despite the annoying hindrance of being merely human.
  • One person can start a movement that changes a country.
  • One person went from getting cut from his high school team to the greatest basketball player ever.
  • One person helped start Apple – the world’s most valuable company.
“Everything around you that you call life was made up by people who are no smarter than you.” – Steve Jobs
Go watch someone do something impossible. Then go do something impossible yourself. One person can change the world. Be that person.

There you go, 6 strategies for persevering and not giving up. Now go do something impossible and don’t quit!
Did I miss anything? Any strategies that work for you, that you’d like to add?

Eat well: The ayurvedic way of life

Eat well: The ayurvedic way of life

Ancient wisdom suggests if you start your meal with heavy and sweet food, then move on to the savory part, and finally finish off with salad, you'll digest better and also manage to keep the flab away.
Ayurvedic cooking is about foods that suit your dosha (constitution). It involves a balanced meal, which nourishes and fulfills the requirements of the body, builds immunity, heals the body, aids digestion and eliminates waste. To avoid contracting season-specific illnesses, ayurveda recommends seasonal diets to help the body acclimatise to the season; warm spices and heavy grains on cold winter days and lighter foods such as fruits and vegetable salads during summer.

How to Start....

To start with an ayurvedic way of life, have a good look at your current diet and try consuming foods with fewer preservatives, artificial colours and chemicals. Check out how much of frozen, fried and fermented foods form your diet and find out if you can replace them with freshly-cooked meals.
Identify your dosha (vata, pitta, kapha) based on your physical attributes and emotional strength. Doshas define the requirements of your body and lifestyle. If you have a thin, long frame, are lively, chatty and always on the move, you have a vata constitution. Try to include warm, moist ingredients like ghee, oils, ginger, garlic and eggs in your meals. People with a pitta dosha are intense, intelligent, and goal-oriented and have a vibrant complexion. They require cooling foods like coconut, lots of fluids, salads, greens and fruits to pacify their fiery nature. People with a kapha constitution are lazy, often bulky, calm and patient by nature. They benefit from warm, dry and light foods like besan, hot spices like cloves and black pepper, pungent flavours like ginger-lemon, garlic chutney and teas.

Ancient wisdom for modern minds

To achieve good health, it's essential to digest the meal and assimilate the nutrients well; mealtime plays an important role here. Eat when you're hungry, and follow the rhythms of nature. For instance, the digestive fire is weak late at night and stronger in midday and around sunset. Have an early dinner. Replace coated aluminum cooking vessels with pure iron or brass vessels.
Moreover, use spices that ignite the digestive fire but only in the amount required to induce hunger and digest the food. Excessive is again against nature and health. Eat heavy, sweet foods at the start of a meal, sour and salty in the middle, and bitter astringents, like salads, towards the end for easy digestion. Because sweet and heavy oils ignite fire, salty and sour flavours process the foods eaten, and bitter astringents subside the ignited fire to complete the process.

How to Make Waking Up Comfortable and Pleasurable (Instead of Punishing)

How to Make Waking Up Comfortable and Pleasurable (Instead of Punishing)

This is no way to start the morning, though it's probably the most common way: Hit snooze over and over until you're aggravated enough to get up or play mean tricks on yourself, like placing the alarm clock across the room or shredding money if you don't get up. But instead of punishment, what if you made it more pleasurable to get out of bed, even as the weather's getting colder? Consider these (often automated) alternatives.
To be clear, getting yourself out of a warm bed into a cold house to start the day is kind of the definition of what the folks on Twitter like to say. Just because it's kind of a luxurious problem doesn't mean you should just suck it up and not do anything about it, if you've got the means to.

Add More Comfort To Your Mornings

The most obvious recommendation is to set your automatic coffeemaker for the morning, because, frankly, it works. There's the sound of the coffee brewing (even louder if your coffeemaker grinds your beans first) and the irresistible smell.
If you're not a java drinker, you can still put your automatic coffeemaker to use: Boil hot water for tea in your coffeemaker or brew the tea in the machine itself.
Consider spa-ifying your home to make it more enticing to arise to. Think Red Envelope stuff to tempt you out of bed:
  • Warm, fuzzy slippers
  • A velvety bathrobe
  • A scented oil diffuser (perhaps put on a timer) with oils that are supposed to be energizing, like citrus
  • A towel warmer for after your shower
All definitely worth the price, if you consider the cost of being late or being stressed about being late, versus getting up relaxed and refreshed in the morning. On the other hand, you could do the opposite: Lower your comfort level in bed to make you so uncomfortable in bed you'll be ok with getting up (as a fellow sleepyhead, however, if you're skeptical about that, I don't blame you).
Not enough? Here are some other suggestions:
  • Heat your room: Whether you use an automatic thermostat or a space heater on an outlet timer, you can eliminate one of the biggest obstacles to getting up: The difference in heat between your bed and just outside your bed. Time your heaters so they blast at you just around wakeup time.
  • Stretch: As soon as your grumpy self awakes, try an energizing, delicious (yes, delicious) full-body stretch. While still lying in bed, raise your arms above your head and stretch your legs out, then take a deep breath in and out while (inevitably) yawning. Repeat a couple of times, think about stuff you have to and, importantly, want to do today, and you may find getting up easier.
  • Let the sun shine in: Rising by the light of the sun may the most natural way to wake, but many of us may prefer simulating the rising sun on our own terms. You can create a DIY Sunrise Simulator with a halogen lamp or simply adjust your curtains so that in the mornings they let in a little sunlight (but not too much).
  • Set up a great music alarm: The best trick in your wake-up routine might be a more moving song than the default buzz.

Give Yourself Something to Look Forward To

  • Prepare a warm breakfast or treat: Perhaps the smell of warm coffee doesn't get you up. How about a warm breakfast? Make oatmeal in a slow cooker or rice cooker to be ready just as you wake. If you don't care for oatmeal, you can instead set a treat (e.g., chocolate chip muffin) on the counter the night before as an incentive with similar purpose.
  • Treat yourself to something that feels good: Got a massage pillow or foot massager? Use it as an incentive, so instead of resisting getting up, you have a ritual morning massage to look forward to.
  • Postpone something you want to do: So far, we've noted physical things that might make waking up more pleasant—a warm cup of coffee and oatmeal waiting, a heated room, a big robe. Besides those physical things, think of psychological motivations that might get you up early: the chance to have the house to yourself (instead of your family members), a jump start on some project you're interested in, 10 minutes working out, checking your favorite website (e.g., DAILY TIMES), and so on.
What are your get-out-of-bed tricks?

10 Ways to Enhance Memory for Students

You may wonder how you manage to remember information for a test. Parents often worry how well their children are learning and whether schools are meeting educational standards. Parents and teachers have big dreams that their children and students should become successful in their life. But, whether you succeed or not, all depends on this one aspect: your mind.  Your mind matters and what matters more is your memory. Memory has three stages which include sensory information (replica of what you see and hear/ also called encoding), short-term memory (active/working memory also called storage) and long-term memory (permanent memory/retrieval). Learning is the outcome of memory and learning depends on how well you have processed the information. As ability to recall information is needed for students, the information they learn should be passed on from the short term memory to long term memory in order to retain information during exams, tests or whenever required.

Here are some tips for learning that will enhance your ability to recall information and achieve excellent results:

How much is too much:  There’s a need to understand the span of attention of students and their capacity to store information in their working memory. It is not educationally sound to impose on the students huge amount of information for long period of time, this will leave them confused and clueless. Instead, giving them limited information for study and helping them to learn with vigour will aid in retaining the information for a longer period of time.

1. Adding Emotion: Anything taught with the element of emotion will be easily retained in our memory. This means students are likely to recall information that induces an emotional response. Teachers can use this tactic in English, History and Science classes. For example: if the lesson is on galaxy, the teacher can induce emotions in the students by showing them videos or pictures of the galaxy and stars.

2. Reading, writing and recollecting: Anything which is read out loudly will enhance your retention than just reading it. Writing down the important points or facts will help in retention and will be useful while studying for exams. Recollecting is the ability to retain the information after reading and writing. If you have encoded the information efficiently then you will be able to retrieve the information.

4. Rehearsal: It is said ‘Practice makes a man perfect’, therefore, rehearsing information till you master any concept is very important. Rehearsal improves your memory and gets etched onto your long-term memory. Also, rehearsing the right information is essential because unlearning the inaccurate information which is passed on to the long-term memory will be a challenging task. Hence, practice over time and ace your exams without cramming all information in one night.

5. Give meaning: If there is any subject which has many names, dates and figures; then it is always better to associate these facts with something. Giving meaning to meaningless concepts or information through ways such as poems, mnemonics, music and rhythm will improve retention of this information for future use. Nevertheless, you can use an aid such as chunking which plays a significant role in enhancing the short term memory transfer to long term memory. Chunking numbers, colours or aspects in groups helps in remembering and learning the concepts faster.

6. Make connections: It is vital to make connections or associations between the new information and the previously learnt information. The higher the number of associations made, the more chances of retaining that information easily and this in turn induces your memory power through which you can retrace the information easily.

7. Avoid distractions: While studying, choose a quiet and peaceful environment, comfortable seating and table, bright light, proper ventilation and avoid distracting things around you. Here, distracting elements include anything that diverts your attention, for instance: video games, T.V., music player, phones, and the like. While studying, if distraction persists then encoding the information suffers leading to forgetting. Hence, for encoding to be efficient you shouldn’t give ways to distraction instead concentrate and give maximum attention to avoid the inability to retrieve information.

8. Get some rest: Take a break between learning. You have heard that ‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, so take breaks after few hours of studying and relax your mind. Not only breaks but physical exercise and sound sleep strengthens your ability to retain the information. Sleep is very crucial to boost your memory. Sleep helps us learn new information and pass the information to the long-term memory. However, for most of the problems including imbalance of mind and body, stress, preparing for exams- the best prescription commonly given is get some sleep! So, say goodbye to cramming all night.

9. Teach others to help you revise better: Whatever you have learnt will be useful when you share that knowledge to another person. So, one of the best ways to learn is to teach what you’ve learnt to another person. This is the reason why teachers have mastered the concepts they teach because they have to teach the same lessons and concepts to many batches in school. Adding to this, if the concepts are thought using real life stories and examples or experiments, then the students are likely to remember them for life because anything visual stimulates our attention and learning takes place faster.

10. Questioning enhances learning: Asking questions like why, how, what helps in learning concepts well because here the reasoning, thinking and analysis is involved. Anything which triggers our mental processors helps in learning the concepts faster and better. Finding answers to these questions makes memory work out as all the mental processors are involved making the memory charged and active. Besides, another way to ask question is by taking the quizzes or tests which will help in reasoning and in a way enhance your memory power. Here, the end process will be getting feedback from the tests which plays a vital role in knowing what is right and what is wrong. All this collectively heightens your memory power because your brain is at its maximum functionality.

These are the 10 ways which will help you learn efficiently and remember information so that they can be retrieved whenever in need. If these procedures are followed anyone can learn anything quickly and retrace the information efficiently. However, all these procedures have to be followed in a systematic way and one shouldn’t end up multi-tasking. The reason is because our brain processes and stores the information systematically. This is not practiced then certain glitches can occur in the process of learning which will lead to forgetting. Now, you know that the old myths of rote learning don’t work. These guidelines will help students as it will help them reason and learn using the above methods which will have a great impact on the way they can retrieve information whenever asked for. Therefore, retention depends on how well you make use of these sure-fire ways to become more effective learner by simply enhancing your memory power for excellent results. Ultimately, don’t forget that remembering is a skill that takes lot of practice and learning is a life-long process and has to go on for our existence on earth. So, happy learning as memory is like a computer, you need to press Ctrl + S (Save) for all important information, press Backspace for all irrelevant information and press Delete for unused/useless information. Now F5 (Refresh) your mind and practice these useful methods.

Unwilling to take risk

Unwilling to take risk

Once someone asked a farmer if he had planted wheat for the season. The farmer replied "No. I was afraid it wouldn't rain." The man asked, "Did you plant corn?" The farmer said, "No. I was afraid that insects would eat the corn." Then the man asked, "What did you plant?" The farmer said, "Nothing. I played it safe."
"Life is like a ten-speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use."
- Charles Schultz

Success involves taking calculated risks. Risk-taking does not mean gambling foolishly and behaving irresponsibly. People sometimes mistake irresponsible and rash behavior as risk-taking.
Risk-taking is relative. The concept of risk varies from person to person and can be result of training. To both a trained mountain climber and a novice, mountain climbing is risky, but to a trained person it is not irresponsible risk-taking. Responsible risk-taking is based on knowledge, training, careful study, confidence and competence - factors that give you the courage to act while facing fear. The person who never attempts anything risky makes no mistakes. However, not making the attempt is often a bigger mistake than making the attempt and failing.
Indecision is habit forming and contagious Many opportunities are lost because of indecision. Take risks, but don't gamble. Risk-takers move ahead with open eyes. Gamblers shoot in the dark.

Knowledge is not power

Knowledge is not power

"If you think education is expensive, try ignorance."
- Derek Bok

We often are told that knowledge is power. Not really. Knowledge is information. It is potential power and it becomes power only when it is acted upon. What is the difference between a person who cannot read and a person who can, but does not read? As Ben Franklin said, "Not a whole lot."
Learning is a lot like eating. It is not how much you eat matters, what matters is how much you can digest. Knowledge is potential power; wisdom is real power. Education takes many forms; it is not just grades and a degree. It is:
  • Cultivating your strength
  • Learning self discipline
  • Listening
  • Eagerness to learn
Our mind are like muscles, stretch or shrink, it all depends on how much or how little we exercise them.
Intelligence is a quickness to learn. Skill is an ability. Competence is the ability alongwith the willingness and desire to apply what is learned. Desire is the attitude that makes a skillful person competent. Ability without the right attitude is wasted.

"The first duty of a university is to teach wisdom, not trade; character and technicalities."
- Winston Churchill

Be Grateful but do not expect Gratitude

Be Grateful but do not expect Gratitude

"Gratitude is the fairest blossom which springs from the soul."
                                                                                                                           -Henry Ward Beecher

Gratitude is a beautiful word. Gratitude is a feeling. It improves our personality and builds character. Gratitude develops out of humility. It is a feeling of thankfulness towards others. It is conveyed through our attitude towards others and reflects in our behavior. Gratitude does not mean reciprocating good deeds, gratitude is not give and take. Kindness, understanding and patience cannot be repaid. What does gratitude teach us? It teaches us the art of cooperation and understanding. Gratitude must be sincere. A simple thank you can be gracious. Many times we forget to be thankful to people closest to us, such as our spouse, our relatives and our friends. Gratitude would rank among the top qualities that form the character and personality of an individual with integrity. Ego stands in the way of showing gratitude. A gracious attitude changes our outlook in life. With gratitude and humility, right actions come naturally.
Gratitude ought to be a way of life, something that we cannot give enough of. It can mean a smile, or a thank you, or a gesture of appreciation.
Think of your most precious possessions. What makes them special? In most cases, the gift is less significant than the giver. Seldom are we grateful for the things we already possess.
Think back and try to recall the people who had a positive influence on your life. Your parents, teachers, anyone who spent extra time to help you. Perhaps it appears that they just did their job. Not really. They willingly sacrificed their time, effort, money and many other things for you. They did it out of love and not for your thankfulness. At some point, a person realizes the effort that went in to help them shape their future.
Perhaps it is not too late to thank them.
Winning is an event; Being a winner is a spirit

Winning is an event; Being a winner is a spirit

"There are some defeats more triumphant than victories."
                                                                                                                        - Michel de Montaigne

Three people ran a marathon along with hundreds of others. None of them won the race. Does that mean that these three people were losers? Not at all. Each went into the race with different objectives. The first ran the race to test his endurance - he came out better than his expectation. The second wanted to improve on his previous performance, and he did. The third person had never run a marathon - his objective was to complete the race and he did. Each of these three entered the race with different objectives; they all met them, and they were all winners, regardless of who won the medal.
Mark Twain said, it is better to deserve an honor and not have it than to have it and not deserve it. Dignity is not in possessing but deserving.
If winning is your only objective, you may miss out on the internal rewards that come with doing something well. More important than winning is winning with honor and deserving to have won. It is better to lose honorably than to succeed dishonestly. Losing honorably may signify lack of preparation but dishonest winning signifies lack of character.
The real test of a person's character is what he would or would not do, if he knew he would not get caught. It is not worth compromising one's integrity and taking shortcuts to win. One may win a trophy but knowing the truth one can never be a happy person. More important than winning a trophy is being a good human being.
Winners live and work every day as if it were their last day because one of these days it is going to be and nobody knows which one. But when they leave, they leave as winners.
